Golf Apparel

Even if you don’t play golf, many people will have an idea of what golfing clothing looks like, from seeing groups of students playing ‘pub golf’ to matches on the TV. The game of golf has been around for hundreds of years, and the clothing is just as steeped in tradition as the game itself. From the early outfits worn to brave the elements in Scotland, to the modern golf attire of today, see below for a brief history of golf fashion over the years.

The first golf clothing

Golf first originated in 15th century Scotland, so players wore thick fabrics like plaid or tweed to protect them from the cold weather. These knickerbockers or ‘plus fours’ were paired with flat caps and heavy tweed jackets, and elements of this style can still be seen in modern golf clothing today.

The 1900s

A Vanity Fair article from 1918 stated that the well-dressed golfer should wear a single-breasted jacket, waistcoat, long socks and golf cap. Golf continued to grow in popularity throughout the 1920s and upper-class players took their fashion to the next level with patterned long socks, two-tone shoes, shirts and ties and knitted cardigans.

The 1930s and 1940s

Things took a more casual turn in the 30s and 40s, as golfers moved away from the knickerbocker style towards long flannel trousers. Wearing a shirt and tie also became less common, and following the heatwave of the US Open in 1933, golfers moved away from heavy fabrics towards more lightweight, casual clothing.

Modern-day attire

Golf attire nowadays tends to be much more casual, but it’s always worth checking if a club has a dress code before you play. Male golfers tend to wear a knitted golf shirt or vest with chinos or another casual trouser in a lightweight fabric. Polo shirts are also popular, as are two-tone golf shoes.

Popular styles for women include a matching two-piece of a shirt and skirt or trousers, plus accessories like visors, sun hats and belts.

Men’s Golf Fashion

1970s

If there was ever a most radical shift in golf attire, it was due to the groovy style of the 1970s. Colors like purple, magenta, and kelly green were woven into houndstooth patterns on pants and shirts. With the increase of television broadcast, professional golfers greatly influenced the looks of American viewers.

1990s

Athletic sponsorship sparked a change in fashion during the 90s. Designers like Levi’s, Nike, and Tommy Hilfiger influenced the public by incorporating logos on athletic wear. Modernized knickers made an appearance along with Scottish inspired plaid patterns.

Golf has come a long way since those first initial swings in Scotland. It is a game with a rich history in fashion and tradition that has lasted for five centuries. When you picture golf today, it’s extraordinary to still see traces left behind by the forefathers that stood and swung their clubs on those chilly moors so long ago.
